Barbie-Q Fishing Rod

Posted on

As the son of a fishing enthusiast Troy spends alot of time in retail stores that sell fishing gear. On our trip to one such store in the– not very retail orientated–island of Long Island Bahamas he asked for a fishing rod. But the only rod his size was a child size Barbie Doll themed rod. Pink and light blue with flowers on it. His father said no. I said there is nothing else to do on an empty beach all day. Troy said “I want it.” The cashier lady pointed out to us “This is for girls.” We said we know. People in the store told us “Have fun but don’t tell him it is Barbie!” We said he already knows.

What we didn’t realize is that Troy does not know what Barbie is. He has never seen a Barbie doll and since we limit his TV watching to stations without commercials he has not seen a Barbie commercial. When we got to the beach he jumped out of the car and asked “Where is my Bar-Be-Q fishing rod??” So when he hard people at the store saying Barbie he interpreted it as  Bar-Be-Q–as in grill out!

Troy spent everyday, hours per day, fishing. He showed patience while waiting for the big fish to bite. Had his cooler ready to throw the fish in. A few days into playing with it he was standing waiting and looked at it and asked me “Are there flowers on this?”

After the 5th day of him not putting the rod down, carrying it everywhere, his daddy said it was the best thing he ever bought at a fishing store.

  1. This is hilarious! He is so smart and funny:) The fishing rod is the perfect size for him. No wonder he could concentrate on fishing for hours. He had a great control of his rod, unlike the big ones he usually handles. The photo tells it all.
